Training Reform Increases Pressure on 3d and Bim Skills in the Construction Sector

On 1 August 2026, the modernized training regulations for the profession of structural engineer and structural engineer (formerly a structural draftsman) will enter into force. The aim of the reform is to adapt training more closely to the requirements of an increasingly digitalized construction industry. In particular, digital planning methods, 3D modeling and Building Information Modeling (BIM) are coming into focus.

The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) reports that in future trainees will be better prepared for the planning, coordination and implementation of construction projects in digital working environments. The new training content thus takes account of the increasing digitalization of the sector.

This development means that modern software solutions and modern work processes are increasingly becoming a basic requirement for engineering firms and prefabricated plants that are entitled to receive training. 2D-only planning approaches are becoming less important, while model-based working methods and BIM skills are becoming more relevant.
